About 9km from the center of My Tho, Tien Giang, Dong Tam snake farm is known as the snake kingdom of Vietnam, with over 400 species of snakes.
Dong Tam Snake Farm is located on the banks of the Tien River, covering about 30 hectares with a spacious green space. This is one of the largest snake farms in Vietnam and it is considered as the first snake museum in Vietnam, attracting many domestic and foreign tourists to visit, learn and study.
You can see the snakes by your own eyes from the gentle, non-poisonous to the extreme poisonous. Snakes are raised freely, including 3 areas suitable for each species. They also separate areas to rear precious species of snakes, such as the king cobras, burrowing cobras and ringhals, another to grow medicinal plants, a hospital for snakebite treatment, a research department, an animal reserve and a snake museum.
The farm has the tasks of doing scientific research, rearing and conserving precious species of snakes, medicinal plants and animals, producing traditional medicines and providing first aids and treatment for people who are bitten by poisonous snakes in the region. Dong Tam Snake Farm has become a scientific center with great achievements in curing people.
The farm is now under the operation of military, with a big collection of not only snakes but also some animals like: crocodiles, bears, turtles, sheep and ostriches. Some of them are mutant – evidences of the spraying of Agent Orange in the Mekong Delta during war time.
