Currently, the historic Hoa Lu ancient capital has an area of 13.87 km² in Ninh Binh province. Hoa Lu was the first capital of the feudal state of centralization in Vietnam. Hoa Lu Ancient Citadel is an important national relic complex of Vietnam and one of the four core areas of Trang An World Heritage Site complex which was recognized by UNESCO.

With a long history over 1000 years, ancient capital Hoa Lu is a place to store historical relics through the ages. Today, the ancient citadel no longer exists, and few vestiges of the 10th century remain. Visitors can see temples built in honor of the emperors Đinh Tiên Hoàng and Lê Đại Hành (Dinh temple and Le temple), their sons, and Queen Dương Vân Nga, who was married first to Đinh Tiên Hoàng and then to Lê Đại Hành. The tomb of Đinh Tiên Hoàng is located on nearby Mã Yên Mountain, while the tomb of Lê Đại Hành lies at the foot of the mountain.

The temple to Đinh Tiên Hoàng is located on the foundation of the royal citadel. The location is in the "tien thuy hau son" style incorporating the principles of "phong thủy", with a river to the front and a mountain at the back. The temple was designed in the "noi cong ngoai quoc" style.

The architecture, art, and devotional statues of the temple to Lê Đại Hành are similar to those of the temple of Đinh Tiên Hoàng. The temple still retains its original architectural beauty.

Festival of Hoa Lu which is held on the 10th day of the third lunar month. The festival is in memory of the Kings of the Dinh and Le dynasties. The festival lasts for three days with many traditional games and martial arts, reflecting local residents’ legends.
