Post office
Saigon Central Post Office is one of the typical buildings Ho Chi Minh City. Located at number 2, Paris Commune Street, District 1. The building is next to Notre Dame Cathedral. This is also a tourist attraction for travelers to Ho Chi Minh City.
This is a French-built building which was constructed between 1886 and 1891 with a European style designed by architect Villedieu with assistant Foulhoux. It’s also a Western-style architecture combined with oriental decoration.
Outside, in front of the building is decorated in each of rectangular, on which is the names of the inventors of the telegraph and electricity. On the rectangular, there are the masks of male and female wearing laurel wreaths. On the arc of the house is a large clock. In the upper side, two high walls are two historical maps bearing the name: Saigon et ses environs, 1892 and Lignes télégraphiques du Sud Vietnam et du Cambodge, 1936.
The building inside is big and airy with a lot of space. The ceiling was designed with arc shape which was carried by the two rows of steel pillars. This makes the building look grander and more stable. Also, the building looks just perfectly in harmony with the outside, considering its arched windows creatively designed with engaged piers, green window shutters or the main entrance with intricate ironwork.
